There is a very interesting piece in todays online edition of the Indie by Johann Hari on the current student, and other protests currently occurring in, primarily, London
It expresses much of what has been discussed on various blogs recently.

If nothing else, write to your MP. Tell him you'll be voting for the Green Party (even if you aren't), that should galvanise him.... ![]()
Crush revolt with brutality and you'll scare the rest of the population into accepting unjust laws, immoral decisions, etc., because fearful of demonstrating against them publicly...the police, in general, are there to uphold the law, but they can also be used to suppress the people if ordered to do so by the government of the day even if not breaking any law. I hate to think what our future demos are going to be like...people will die if the police continue being so aggressive...remove this elite squad of thugs that the police force have on call and we may return to civilized demonstrations...currently, these thugs are going to just hurt as many people as they can to create fear...all they do is create hatred and contempt for the ordinary policemen, which is really bad for everybody...depressing damned world now...and even more depressing since this damned coalition came into being...
Very good article, I agree with it. A police state is round the corner if we aren't careful.
It's an interesting article, but in my opinion the rot started years ago when Thatcher introduced many limitations on assembly and movement of miners during the 1984/5 strike
Oh yes. As steelworkers we were deeply involved. One day two car loads of us decided to have a mini fishing match on the Trent, at Ollerton A1 roundabout we were turned back on threat of arrest if we didn't comply. We pointed to the fishing stuff in the back and on the roof rack to no avail. Later that day a woman was taken to hospital with a fractured skull after being run over by a police horse. None of this has been forgotten and has been passed down a generation and is pretty well inbred. If people thought the students were bad, wait until the council workers are roused. The action might be more passive but the strategy will be far more costly to this corrupt government.
