Hi to everybody...bloody unbelievable!!.....

Yep. We live in a parallel universe to these people.
How bloomin disgusting is that!!!!xxxxx
But they will have to pay it eventually - just not yet. That is what deferred means isn't it?
I'm not sure about whether tax people do treat rich people better on the whole.
I remember years back when the Labour government brought in IR35 to supposedly close a loophole being used by 'fatcats' and it destroyed the IT industry over a period of around 6 months.
Our family was a casualty of that and our little company went bust overnight. We had our tax money set aside but had nothing left to pay for food, mortgage etc as things changed so quickly (despite government assurances it would only affect a tiny fraction of people and not damage the industry at all) and the tax people were wonderful and told us to make sure we had a roof over our heads and food on the table before we even thought about paying tax.
Apparently they had hundreds maybe thousands of families in the same boat. So I think tax people can be very understanding and helpful to poor people too.
Deferring it when it's needed now, I would have thought was not right at all...the vast majority of ordinary people do not get to defer their tax...our son was sent a tax bill, not late or anything, and, on the bottom, it said that if it wasn't paid immediately, the bailiffs would be sent round!! He tried ringing the number given, but never got through...ended up paying but he had extend his overdraft in order to do so...you were fortunate even to get through to the tax office...constantly engaged in London, and here when Ray tried to make an inquiry about his tax...
Hint for dealing with tax office - find out your local office and ring them or go and visit them. They are very nice.
I've needed to deal with them directly on a number of occasions over the years from when I was a student, right up to when my Dad died and I dealt with the situation for my widowed Mum.
About six different tax districts over three decades. Every time they have been wonderfully kind and helpful. I think people assume they will be unpleasant and so maybe give up too easily. But seriously it can save loads of money and time if you speak to someone directly.
I've never yet met face to face an unhelpful tax person and maybe once or twice met them on the phone.
I have to admit the ones we dealt with when we moved to Greece were tricky - but they were 'general' phone answerers and not local and obviously with us living in Greece we couldn't visit personally.
Hope you can get better service from them in future.
P.s. always take names and times of calls and staff department and let them know you are doing that - it helps keep phone staff on their toes if they know they are identifiable.
I left work in 2009, got a belated quarterly bonus in Jan 2010, which unbeknown to me wasn't declared to the taxman by Corus. When it was discovered, I was ordered, not asked, to pay my first monthly installment (£17) in January this year. It wasn't deferred, it just took them 2 years to get around to my case. I would have thought if it involved £millions, they could move it up the queue for the nation's benefit.
If that had been me the taxman would have ripped the shirt off my back straight away...![]()
